Why Sunshine Horn Camp?

 

Sunshine Horn Camp is an interactive program dedicated to horn students in middle school and high school who want to learn at an accelerated rate.

  • Dr. Natalie Douglass Grana

    Ear Training and How To Find Your Pitch Workshop

    Natalie Douglass Grana is a hornist and educator based in Chicago, IL.

    She is on faculty at DePaul University, Loyola University, and Lake Forest College and previously served as Assistant Professor of Horn and head of brass at Utah Valley University. Dr. Grana is hornist with the Gaudete Brass, a Chicago-based brass quintet that actively commissions new pieces and performs across the country.

    Her performance experience also includes performing with the Chicago Philharmonic, Boston Brass, Alloy Horn Quartet, Utah Symphony, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Josh Groban, Louisville Symphony, and Mannheim Steamroller. While in Utah, she also recorded musical soundtracks, video game music, and film scores for various recording studios.

    Dr. Grana is an authority on inner hearing and solfege training and specializes in transferring these skills to horn, inspired by her U.S. Fulbright Grant to the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Academy in Hungary. Her book, "A Singing Approach to Horn Playing," is available through Oxford University Press. She has been a guest artist at some of the world’s finest musical institutions, including the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague in the Netherlands and the Royal Academy of Music in London. She has taught horn and led the musicianship curriculum at the renowned Kendall Betts Horn Camp since 2013.

    An enthusiastic proponent of the alphorn, she has performed and given masterclasses across the United States and abroad, and is on faculty at the Northwest Alphorn Workshop, the Lake Tahoe Alphorn Seminar, the Windy City Alphorn Workshop, and the Alphorn Institute.

  • Dr. Jessica Pearce

    Horn Maintenance Workshop

    Dr. Jessica Pearce, Instructor of Horn at Eastern Illinois University

    Jessica Pearce is a versatile performer and teacher based out of central Illinois. She has been Instructor of Horn at Eastern Illinois University since 2018, and her duties include teaching horn and music education courses. In addition to teaching at EIU, she performs with the EIU Faculty Brass Quintet and EIU Faculty Wind Quintet. She was Adjunct Instructor of Horn at Illinois Wesleyan University, her alma mater, from 2016-2019.

    In 2018 Jessica completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Horn Performance and Literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During this degree she studied horn with Bernhard Scully and also studied jazz improvisation with Jim Pugh. Prior to working on her doctorate, Jessica worked as a freelancer and private teacher in the Chicago area from 2011-2015.

    Jessica plays Assistant Principal and Utility Horn with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Second Horn with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony. She has also performed with Calypsus Brass, the Quad City Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, the Gil Evans Project, Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Chicago, the Southwest Michigan Symphony, da Corneto Opera Company, Millikin-Decatur Symphony, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra.

  • Jaila Carr

    Inclusion, Confidence Building, and Performance Opportunities as a Student Presentation

    Jaila Carr is an active freelance horn player in Boulder, Colorado. Originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, Jaila began her musical training in the Merit School of Music’s Tuition Free Conservatory and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO). These programs allowed her to take part in prestigious programs such as the Fischoff National Chamber Competition and the National Youth Orchestras (NYO2).

    Jaila attended Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts studying with Jon Boen and received a Bachelor of Music in Horn Performance. While in school she played in masterclasses for Greg Flint, David Cooper, Frøydis Ree Wekre, Denise Tryon, Daniel Gingrich, and David Griffin.

    Jaila is currently attending the University of Colorado, Boulder studying with Michael Thornton, and will graduate with a Master of Music in spring 2025. While in Boulder, she has performed with the Boulder Symphony and Colorado Symphony.

  • Sharon Jones

    Masterclass and Performance

    Sharon Jones is an active freelancer throughout the Chicagoland area. As an orchestral musician, she is a proud member of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra horn section, and has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Symphony, the Chicago Philharmonic, Chicago Opera Theater, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW contemporary music program. Sharon is also an active chamber musician as a member of the renowned Chicago Brass Quintet as well as in various chamber ensembles through the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.

    For over 15 years, Sharon has played in theater pit orchestras for over 20 different productions at the Drury Lane Theatre Oak Brook, the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre at Navy Pier, the Goodman Theatre, and various Broadway in Chicago theaters in downtown Chicago. During the summer of 2013, she joined the “Les Miserables” North American Tour, performing throughout the United States and Canada.

    A graduate of Indiana University and Northwestern University, Sharon has studied with Karl Pituch, Michael Hatfield, Gail Williams, and Dale Clevenger. She has been on the music faculty at Benedictine University, Wheaton-Warrenville South High School, Geneva High School, and Elgin Community College.

The performance will be at 11:30 am on Friday, and have all campers playing in a horn choir together, where family and friends are invited to attend and cheer on their horn players!

 

The goal is to enrich students with the love of playing the horn!

This is a quick-paced learning environment where students will be engaged every day by playing, listening, and conversing about the horn!

Why Work with Emily Whittaker?

Emily Whittaker is on the faculty at Elgin Community College and maintains a private studio in the Chicagoland area. She is seen giving masterclasses and clinics at colleges and universities and working as a judge and adjudicator for middle school and high school performances.

She has performed with various ensembles and orchestras across North America, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Music of the Baroque, Omaha Symphony, and Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

Emily loves playing the horn, almost as much as she loves teaching the horn! She has had extensive experience working in day camps and overnight camps and brings all that fun camp-like energy to teaching the horn at Sunshine Horn Camp.
